A journalist who has reported the news to various media houses for the span of two decades, I now live a less stressful life highlighted by delivering lectures on journalism to students of the Communication Arts program of the University of San Carlos. Prior to that, I did the same at the University of San Jose-Recoletos, where I was also Officer in Charge of External Affairs, the unit that takes charge of linkages, media and public relations. Outside the academe, I do Conflict-Sensitive Journalism training for the Philippines office of the Germany-based Forum Ziviler Friedensdienst, and of PECOJON — the Peace and Conflict Journalism Network, under its Peace and Conflict Journalism Program for Southeast Asia. I was, until March 2018, Executive Director/National Coordinator of PECOJON Philippines.
I also do writing, coaching and editing work for this international organization as well as serve in a supervising capacity to its many reporting projects.
Prior to my engagement in the academe, I did full time work as staff reporter of Sun.Star Cebu, were I covered the justice department and the court system. And before that I was a cub reporter for a local radio station.
Other than formal journalism-related education, including a Masters degree in Media Studies, I’ve been fortunate to participate in trainings by the Germany-based International Institute for Journalism (now the Competence Center for Media & Communication for Development), the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility, the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication, and PECOJON.
I am also a Certified Security Professional of the Philippine Society for Industrial Security, a firearms instructor of Kamagong Gun Club Inc., a member of both the Philippine Practical Shooting Association and the International Defensive Pistol Association, a Range Officer of the National Range Officers Institute – Philippines, and an IDPA Safety Officer.
